Midget, 1969


We don't think of Midget Farrelly as a risk taker. In fact, it's easy to conclude that he was conservative to a fault.

Check out this photo...

It's the North Shore, and there's plenty of swell. Now look at that fin. It's small. It's upright. And it's set well forward. I don't care how narrow that board is, this set-up is pure rail control!

So Midget won the world contest in '64? on a longboard and then took second to Rolf Arness in the 1970 worlds on a very short board. Few, very few, were able to make that transition and stay at that level of cutting edge performance!
He's one of the few "surf stars" that I ever wanted to meet. His shop was also producing very beautiful and well-crafted boards at that time.
