I used to paddle out(on my 10-4PG) through the Kaiser channel when it was big. Around 4's and on up to threes. 3's and 4's can handle sizable waves when most spots on the south shore not so much.
If I was riding my 9-5 semi-gun, I would just carry it from Ala Moana parking lot past the Hilton and paddle out to 3's from in front of the Outrigger. I always paddled back to the parking lot and remember days when it was problematic to get a reasonable sized wave to go in on because you had to sit so far outside to avoid the big sets.
The weather is as dreamy as the video clip you posted.
