Hardcore surfers had little use for "surf music" back in the day...but Dick Dale's work has survived, even flourished.
He captured a cultural moment in a more meaningful way than, say, The Beach Boys.
RIP, Dick.

Riding in a beater taxi in Tangier, Morocco 4 months ago and the local dialect radio with local music suddenly blasts out "Miserlou" by Dick Dale. A really weird, disorienting moment. Makes you realize that his music communicated with all kinds of people. I bet he knew a thousand variations of sound he could throw in on the spur of the moment, I remember hearing some of them. He stoked up a lot of surf trips going down the highway!
