If you're a child of the industrial complex, as most of us are, the title of this posting may cross some wires and short circuit some dogmas laid down by our forefathers. To their defense, our forefathers never rode a displacement hull. They may never have understood the concept of flow. Their world mainly consisted of the material, and the carnal to make their way through what they saw as bliss. They were a slave to the traditions and mentalities that have endured since the pit of the Kali Yuga. They pushed things aside to manifest their destiny. One could see how that resonates with those that behave in the same manner when they ride a wave. Work hard, push, and be rewarded. That's one way of doing it, but not the only way.
So, if you are struggling with a good bottom turn or cutting back or just finding that line you had that initially made you "come down" with "displacementia", you might just be trying too hard and falling into that old way of "working hard to get results". It's about downstream as opposed to upstream. How ridiculous would it be to paddle against a strong current? Yet many do. "Hull Heads" have it a little easier, one could say. Their boards aren't submissive compared to the "Formula One" shortboards of today. The shape determines the path. They fit inside a curl and attract water around their bulbous and bladed contours, immersing themselves into a communion of time and speed. To let the board "be", by directing only small corrections to compliment the wave, this seems to be the tao of the displacement hull. Do not disturb the flow. The qualities of the Liddle Displacement hull exemplify this concept. It transitions to different angles whilst minimizing the break of flow. Perhaps that is a main hook in the song for a lot of people that enjoy the design, to be embraced by something and a part of it. Like music. For some, this could be the meditation; a moment of surrender and detachment from the rigors of a fundamental world, where an individual can feel at one with the universe, whether he or she knows it or not. You can't beat water, join it.

This is the second Resin X/EPS board. The first was stringerless, 2 1/2" thickness. "Magic carpet" ride. The way the board conformed to the wave is like no other, due to the properties allowed by the Resin X's extreme ability to flex and rebound. (far beyond poly and epoxy resins). This allows a very smooth, friendly ride, also the volume decrease affords more responsiveness without the penalty of less floatation. The board is very light, however there is no problems sinking the rail and it rides just as low as a thicker, and heavier poly. The only thing is that it doesn't carry the momentum of a heavier board, obviously. A cedar stinger was added to give the board some extra snap and to keep it from over-flexing. The plan shape changed to a lengthened rail line. The board is essentially a 7'6" with the nose and tail squashed off. The bottom rocker remained the same from the last Resin X board.

SORRY FOR THE PHURBA OVERLOAD!!!

It started with a True Ames L flex regular base in hopes it would get some bite and projection out of the turns. It was easy to overpower the fin's flexible tip so the board would "chirp" back if it was pushed too hard. A "chirp" is when the fin suddenly grabs and projects whilst you're gettin' yer drift on. The fin was placed with the trailing edge of the base 12.5" inches from the tail. Sometimes whilst in trim, it was hard to disengage and drop down to get more speed to make a section. When it was pushed up and inch and a half, the board loosened up and worked top to bottom with ease. The past two sessions, it ran a 9" Gl Flex Volan fin from Fibre Glas Fin Co. (Larry Allison). First, with the fin's trailing edge at 12.5" from tail like the TA fin. Major improvement in smoothness during turns and adjustments. It still hung up in trim so fwd an inch and a half it cleaned up. Fin placement is so critical on these boards and each board and pilot are different. Start the fin in the middle and work it out these days.

Below is some footage of said board being ridden in some high tide waves at 1st point. The conditions were good but the backwash made for some interesting rides. Waves were shoulder/chest high.

I always just post pictures but I thought why not start including what I was TRYING to do with small tweaks in the design concept of these boards....

This board has a relaxed elliptical Rocker with a very subtle flat panel (12" wide) blended from just behind the front foot extending out the tail (a sort of triplane). Soft rails taper from the front foot to fwd and aft. The rocker apex is positioned just aft of the plan shape apex. S deck w straightened rails.

For 1st point.

I've been looking for ways to get some planing speed out of my round bottom boards by introducing a subtle triplane to the last half of the board. I hoped it might help me get some extra glide to get back into the pocket from behind the section. Also I hope it will allow me to push the board off the bottom into the high line a little more quickly. I didn't want to make it too prominent as I feared it could mess up the flow. I hope the triplane allows me to correct faster and get back into things. This board doesn't have a lot of rocker. 2 15/16" of nose rocker and 1 7/16" of tail rocker.

The triplane is not noticeable in photos but some of the contours are. I get the best results photographing hulls from a longer distance with a long lens. These were shot @ 215mm

The number of surfers that have shaped more than 5 surfboards is pretty freaking small.
Maybe 1 out of 1,000? More likely 1 out of 10,000. The number of those who’ve shaped
a few hulls? 1 out of 200,000? Maybe even less. This is for the someone whose shaped a
few boards but is thinking about giving a hull a shot. I’m going to assume that they know
about picking a blank with enough thickness and not enough rocker. And that they can
true it up, trim the deck to the maximum thickness, put their rocker on it and square up
the rails. Basically, set up a blank canvas.

It’s really freaking hard to figure where to start. Normally you’d finish up the bottom,
flip it and cut your deck rocker (or foil) then band your rails. Problem is you kinda have
to put the S in the deck so it fits the maximum depth of the hull (no, you’ll have to figure
out that formula yourself!). But your hull bands will determine where the hull goes,
but the rail bands will determine where the S goes. Don’t even get me started about rail
rocker! It’s like a mobius strip; you can’t get there from here. I stared at a blank and a
Liddle I was using as a reference for hours before I started cutting on my first one.

I will tell you this; rocker is key, followed by foil. A good hull’s rocker looks pretty
simple but it isn’t. Trust me.

The best part of the whole hull (yes, there is a pun there somewhere) shaping process is at
the very end when you screen and sand to blend it all together. Sidelights are a must. No
sharp shadows. Like a well done sunburst on a Les Paul, you can’t really put your finger
on the change. That’s when it all comes together and you realize it is not just a surfboard
core, its sculpture. And Greg Liddle is a hell of an artist.

HULL BLUES

This might be lost on you if you don't understand or appreciate The Blues.

The Blues is a framework, a foundation. There are specific rules that help define The

Blues; twelve bars, call and response, I IV V chords, flatted thirds, fifths and sevenths,

minor pentatonic scales, etc. But if you know The Blues, you know that there are infinite

variations within these rules. And ultimately, the rules themselves can be bent like a high

E at the 12th fret.

If a wave is sound, then a hull is The Blues. The rules; flat rocker, pinched rails, round

parallel outline, single flex fin. You stand on these Blues and you ride the music. To the

ill-informed, it all sounds/looks the same, boxed, no freedom. To the experienced, the

game is putting your personal stamp on the Blues. You work within the framework until

you can bend those notes.

Just like The Blues, riding a hull is an extremely personal trip. It's not about flashing

rock and roll. It's feedback through your feet right up to your head; draw, acceleration, g-

forces. It's feel. And, it's really fucking hard to do right!

It's not for everybody, and it's not for all the time. Even Robert Johnson played a waltz

every now and then. But, just like The Blues, there are days when nothing else will

satisfy that itch. Shoulder high, glassy and lined up, you just have to roll one up on a rail

and work through the gears.

All the words and pictures don't mean anything. Pick up a good hull and run your hands

down the rails, sight down the bottom, put it under your arm. Just like a National Steel

Resonator or a '57 Strat. You have to put one under your feet and and strum a nice trim

or riff a rail turn. The challenge to play will last a lifetime. But if you never pick up the

instrument, you'll never know.

HOLE IN ONE

After years of only getting to third gear, I finally got to ride my sweet smoothie in the
kind of waves hulls were meant to ride. The Augusta National of surf spots; so exclusive,
even members get the stink-eye. For two hours, I surfed the most perfect “crap” waves
ever. Every 5-10 minutes a thigh to waist high windswell wave bent into the Bight
and bee-lined-it to the perfect triangle of reef pointing into a warm offshore zephyr.
Giddyup-n-Go for about 40 yards.

Hulling for me, up to this point, was all about the rail turn. The whole trim deal seemed
lame, lazy or both. Well…I get it now. It’s all about the ankles and your big toe. That’s
it. You can play those infinite variations on the line with the slightest change of rail
angle. I just never had the canvas for that kind of brush…

On my last wave, I proned it from the peak, covered up completely until I coasted into
the channel. A Greenough-eye view all the way. The line was picked at take-off, no
pilot input required. The perfect vehicle for the perfect wave.

Always loved the way Wayne Lynch, Nat Young and Ted Spencer surfed in Evolution and the Hot Generation on these Mid length boards. Paul Gross really nailed an 8'4'' for me I still have , but after 17 years it's pretty beat. Hilburs and I made this a few years ago it's just tweeked on the rails, foil , and nose rocker. These really work in everything I surf, but I love this board in junk surf. It rolls on the rail like butter and cuts back so easy with that hip in the tail, fun stuff to look back, but improve ( IMO) on old designs.

McCallum Surfboardshave grabbed my eye ever since I first walked intoIcons of Surf. Not easy in that shop. The often understated aesthetics that Jeff incorporates into his boards, derived from a lifelong affinity for hotrods instilled by his dad, let's the eye catch the details of the board itself. Chimed rails, full and sometimes beaked noses, the boards operate much the same as their influence: old school looks, next school performance. Recently, I was thankful to get a go on one of his new models, a blended spoon and Simmons called the 1954; aptly named for the year Bob Simmons passed.

"Bob Simmons had read and studied this book on hydrodynamics during WWII, came up with this idea, and made these boards," says Jeff. The boards, which existed in obscurity for years and are incredibly odd to look at compared to more conventional boards, resurfaced with some controversy.

"The original Simmons was shaped by Joe Bauguess for Richard Kenvin. Richard had shown me that one, I think that was almost four years ago. I shaped the second one ever. The first was that one, Casper, all white, so I made mine all black just to make it different." The creators of Casper and its negative then bumped heads over who had a right to the shape, but after a clandestine appearance of a McCallum-esque egg, Jeff felt the shape safe to dabble with. After two generations of the board, with a third on its way, Jeff has a deeply instilled sense of the board's concept and abilities, allowing him to tweak it, creating something entirely his own.

"Rather than going with the exact Simmons design," says Jeff, "I wanted to put my own little twist on it." Sensing the similarities between a Simmons and a spoon, the combination seemed appropriate. "The 54 is a tweak of the second generation Simmons, more of a displacement hull, but keeping it real wide. I didn't like a big wide tail on a singlefin, it made it slide out." Behold the answer, El Quatro.

LundgrenYou know what they say, fin placement is everything.

"A lot of the boards I do now are quads, but I really wanted to make a displacement hull Simmons, quad kind of thing. So the rails are real pinched. It doesn't have the full S deck like a traditional hull, like the scoop in the Simmons. It has a flat deck, well not really flat, but mellower, and a little down kick in the tail. I wanted to morph it all into one little thing, you know?"

With no real authority, I'm going to go ahead and pick the 54's soundtrack. Out at Middles on a solid chest high day, the lyrical swagger of Slick Rick was the only voice I had in my head, and that's after a blues filled drive to the beach. The reason for the ruler is found in the feel of the board. It's like running on ice in sneakers, dabbling with the act of losing control and reining it right back in. Not to mention the stories you spin about your session may well get you deported, dependant on your vernacular choices of course. Like Rick, the board is kind of funny to look at, but there's a lot going on.

"The bottom contours are a little more elaborated [than his Simmons] as far as displacement," says Jeff, "the tail is a real hard edge, kind of like a short board egg." For further tweakage, you can even get it with a stringerless tail for flex. "The rails are pinched but all that comes from the extreme displacement in the bottom. They're supposed to be pretty small, I've made them up to seven feet long, but I like the smaller ones."

And so do I. The demo I got my hands on came up to my ribs, standing at a stumpy 4'10", with rails that could perform surgery, and those Middles lines gave me more to be thankful for. With no leash and only 4'10" of foam packed into a borrowed board, I played it cautious for the first couple waves. But off the first, the speed was blatant.

After dropping into a wave, I looked behind, and to my chagrin, my friend was still there. About to kick out, I hit a high line and the razor rails of the 54 Jokered the lip. I Usain Bolted and as I tried to check turn and re-enter far down the line, the board flew out the back like a bar of soap. Apparently, subtlety of motion is the key. If only I had talked to Mitch Abshere first.

"You don't have to do much. It's more ... don't do too much," says Mitch, laughing. "It will do its little turn; you don't have to lay into any of it. It's real subtle, it definitely responds really well. And speed wise, that board is one of the fastest boards I've ever ridden." Dropping in deep and late, I was thankful once again. Getting sent straight down into the flats, I eventually managed to find a rail and get a late bottom turn in. Next thing I knew, I skated my way around the section and right back to the pocket. I think I was still smiling over that wave the following day when I talked to Mitch, but I couldn't quite figure why. Mitch nailed it, "I think my favorite part is that I'm 6'2 and the board is 4'10, and I'm like man, I'm on a 4'10 and I can ride this thing, and I'm having a ton of fun," — one of Jeff's main goals for anyone who picks up the 54.

"I was driving in San Clemente with a friend," says Mitch, "and the 54 was hidden in a sock, and he asks, is that one of the McCallums? He was freaking out." Fluid—whether liquid or gaseous—passing over a wing creates lift. But what distinguishes the humpback’s flipper from an ordinary wing is the presence of tubercles, or bumps, on the flipper’s leading edge. The tubercles enable the flipper to create lift at angles as steep as roughly seventeen degrees, because the water gets accelerated into an organized, rotating flow behind the troughs formed by the tubercles. A flipper with a smooth leading edge would stall, or cease to provide lift, at such an angle, because the water would be spun into a disorganized series of eddies.

It's kinda like 4 wheel steering.

We did another try on a Hull, this time with (much) sharper rails and less volume on nose and tail. The first one is amazing to ride, so much fun. This should be very interesting! Size, 6'6

Tubercle fever spreads to my PG nail fin...

The channels are more prominent for an attempt to keep as much of the leading edge present as possible

for a more subtle feel compared to my other tubercled fin (Greenough 4A).

It's done. Feels like a lightly glassed poly board in arm. Paddles like a hull. I didn't get it into good waves today. The one stomach high wave let me feel the buttery softness. I do wonder if the board will overflex. It is very flexible in the water. This was experienced on a very soft and small wave. Everything changes when the water starts moving a little more so I'm eager to see what happens in a few days. The board doesn't feel like an eps/epoxy board. It's softer. That's the best way I can describe it right now. The EPS doesn't have the "presence" that a poly board has. Ghostly? The outline allowed me to trim very fwd. I also moved the belly fwd in contrast to my winter hulls. ( Billy and Silky)
Trimming on the stringerless felt just like a nose ride. The flexiness of the board soaked up all traces of turbulance so I guess that accounts for the buttery feeling. I really enjoy feeling out a board and this one has some things to figure. The very most important thing to me is that I'm stoked. As always, I'm grateful to all that helped me get this to the water. Hail Liddle.
